Paris, France
It was raining heavily. Hidden by an umbrella and the collar of his coat, Saadi stood at a newsstand staring at a police sketch of his face on the front page of every newspaper. Many people had seen his face after the bombing of the bus, and the sketch had been greatly improved. There was little doubt it was him. He was a hunted man.
The citizens of Paris were demanding justice, no matter the cost. The police seemed more determined than ever. They had set up roadblocks and checkpoints all over the city. It was almost impossible for him to move about. He knew if he stayed in Paris, it was only a matter of time before he was caught. He considered moving to another big city in France like Marseille or Lyon, but he knew that his bombs would have less of an impact on the media. This was Paris. The darling of Europe. Her rape was a slap of reality that could not be ignored.
The Battle for Algiers was heating up. The leaders of the FLN had asked him to return to the capital where his unique skills were needed to fight the French. He had refused up until now. With the righteous suicide of Samiah, he was alone now. There was nobody to help him deliver his bombs, and his face was too well known to be an effective courier. There were attractive Muslim girls he could recruit in Paris, but they didnât seem to have the same devotion to Allah or dedication to the independence of Algeria. They had been seduced by the meaningless baubles of the cityâs boutiques and the long leisurely lunches of the Parisian cafés. It was time to go home and rebuilt his team of female operatives.
His mission to kill Brigitte Friang had failed again, and he felt angry. He didnât understand why Allah could let that happen. Allah was all powerful and all wise. The Friang woman must have some other purpose to have escaped him not once, but twice. His faith was strong. As much as he hated to leave her death undone, he knew he must accept Godâs will.
Getting out of France and back to Algiers would not be easy. Of course, he would disguise himself, but the police had been trained to look beyond the façade. He could make his way down to the coast by train and stowaway on a cargo ship in one of the Mediterranean ports. He decided to carry a bomb with him even though it increased his risk if searched. If caught, he would take the honorable way out like his dear Samiah had done. His last breath would be one of fire and mayhem. He would strike one last time at the French lion.
Saadi noticed the kiosk owner glancing discretely in his direction. It was possible that the man was just minding his newspapers and magazine making sure that Saadi was not reading for free or possibly stealing his inventory. But Saadi could see that it was more than that.
